Call for papers
INTRODUCTION
The Business Continuity Institute is pleased to request the submission of papers to be presented at the BCM World Conference and Exhibition. This event incorporates the prestigious and well established BCI Symposium and will be held on 11th and 12th November in London.
The Conference will feature three streams: those new to BCM, those with some experience of BCM, and experienced practitioners with 5 or more years of expertise.
The three streams will come together in plenary sessions to examine industry wide ideas and issues.
TOPICS
The BCM community has been asked to submit suggestions for topics that they would like to see included in the programme, the most popular of which are listed below with examples of presentation ideas:
Embedding BCM in the Organisation:
Finding your way around the industry; Getting senior management buy in and how to measure it; Business continuity as part of corporate strategy; What happens when the rules of BCM are ignored – a case study
BS25999 and standards across the world
BS25999 implementation and auditing; Developing US BCM Standard; Standards in other countries; Standards used in other areas such as risk and security organisations.
Planning and exercise
Pandemic planning; Practical case studies.
Human Aspects of BCM
General awareness of looking after your staff on a daily basis; Leadership and leadership development; Humanitarian support to staff in a crisis; Psychological contract
Finance and BCM
Concentrating on the financial crisis and BCM; What can be expected from organisations with regards to BC planning.
Communications and IT
Media; How BC teams respond virtually; Risks of cyber crime and fraud; Using virtualization in the BC process; Threats from social networking.
We are therefore actively seeking submissions for papers that come under one of the above headings. Other topics, however, will be considered. Papers should be submitted no later than 4pm on Friday 24th April.
RULES FOR SUBMISSION
1) An outline paper of c1000 words should be submitted – the paper should indicate the key points you plan to cover in your presentation
2) When presented at the conference the paper should not run longer than 20 minutes
3) The paper should be an original paper and not one that has been presented previously
4) Please include a statement emphasising the benefits of your presentation to the audience and indicate whether you think your paper is suitable:
a) as an education document aimed at new practitioners
b) as a case study or similar for experienced practitioners
c) as a more advanced paper pushing the boundaries of BCM for very senior practitioners
5) Please indicate which of the topics your paper covers, or if it is a new topic.
6) Presentations must not be sales pitches
7) You may wish to submit a general paper suitable for a plenary session based upon your own area of expertise – please indicate if this is the case
8) A CV/resume should accompany your paper highlighting other conference/symposium successes you may have had. We may ask you to provide evidence of these speaking engagements or present something to the working group by tele-conference.
9) By submitting a paper you agree to work with the appointed Stream Leader modifying your paper where necessary to ensure a coherent flow of the session
10) By submitting your outline paper you agree to send a comprehensive written paper in support of your presentation one month in advance of the conference.
11) All papers should be sent to lucy.burns@thebci.org no later than 4pm on Friday 24th April.
REVIEW
The outline papers will be considered by the Working Party and an initial programme drawn up by the end of May. Those who have submitted papers will be advised at this point whether they have been successful or not.
Selection will be based on the following criteria:
- Relevance to the suggested topics
- Inclusion of lessons learned and ideas for future trends
- Benefits to the audience
- Your experience as a presenter
COMPENSATION
The primary speaker for a submission which is subsequently accepted as a presentation for the Conference will receive a full conference delegate place which includes admission to all conference proceedings and the exhibition, and attendance at the pre-dinner drinks and gala dinner.
Co-presenters will receive a 50% discount on the full delegate rate if they are attending the two days and will be able to attend all conference proceedings, the exhibition, pre-dinner drinks and the gala dinner.
