Crisis Management Workshop
“The key principles of an effective crisis management capability: a preview of PAS200.”
Tuesday 13th July , Leeds
Many organisations – and especially those with well-established BCM plans – will already have a designated incident management team; you may even refer to it as the “crisis management team”. Others may have an informal arrangement that brings together a group of managers to deal with the more serious incidents as and when they occur. In both cases, it is likely that the teams perform well in managing the predictable disruptions where contingency plans have been created and tested (although there is always room for improvement) but how well do they manage the “unknown unknowns”? How well equipped is your organisation to manage the situations that are not just complex but where the outcomes of decisions, based on limited and doubtful data, will directly impact corporate strategy and reputation, or the well-being of employees.
An effective crisis management capability should be viewed as complementary to the BCM programme and the guidance from the British Standards Institution, known as PAS200, aims to provide a framework that defines the key elements that should be considered. PAS200 is currently in the final stages of publication and so the BCI Crisis Management Workshop on 13th July, in Leeds, will provide valuable insight into the thinking behind this new guidance. A series of presentations and discussion exercises will provide delegates with the opportunity to consider how their current crisis management capability might be refined to better meet the strategic needs of the organisation.
The Workshop will address five key elements of crisis management, as defined by PAS200.
Understanding crises - When does an incident become a crisis and why might it be important to distinguish between incidents and crises? Why might an organisation become vulnerable to a crisis, even when they have an effective BCM programme in place?
Developing a crisis management capability - What is the importance of situational awareness and what is a CRIP? What new skills might need to be developed?
Planning and preparing for crisis response and recovery- The crisis management team and the importance of leadership. Fast-time decision-making under conditions of uncertainty. How well do your plans take account of human behaviour?
Communicating in a crisis- What should the communications strategy include? How might “new media” affect our decision-making? What are the barriers to effective communication?
Evaluating crisis management capability - Are you a learning organisation? What kinds of exercises are needed to rehearse the crisis management team? How are “lessons identified” documented and audited?
The sessions will be led by members of the steering group responsible for the development of PAS200 and will be illustrated by a practical exercise that runs throughout the day. Delegates will work in teams in order to provide the opportunity to exchange ideas and experience with fellow continuity and crisis management practitioners.
Who should attend?
The Workshop is intended for practitioners at all levels as it will explore the key principles of crisis management, as described in PAS200. Additionally, senior managers designated as responsible for responding to major disruptive events will find the event to be of value in considering the ways in which an organisation might equip itself to become more “crisis aware”.
