Flooding Workshop

The purpose of the BCI Flooding Workshop is to explore and capture the lessons to be learnt, in BCM terms, from the disruption that resulted from the flooding that occurred in the UK during June and July. The format of the event will be a mix of brief presentations, including a number of case studies, and group discussions designed to encourage the sharing of experience and ideas amongst the participants.

The Workshop will comprise three main sessions …

  • What Happened? How much warning was there? What is pluvial flooding and why is it a continuing threat this coming winter? What were the immediate impacts and what were the unexpected consequences? What were the priorities for the emergency services, the local authorities and other responding agencies? How did organisations communicate with their employees?
  • The Response . How effective was the response? Do we understand the roles of the key agencies involved? What support was provided to the business community? Was it appropriate; and was it sufficient? What problems did the scale of the event cause?
  • The Challenges and Lessons Learned . What were the major challenges; and what lessons can we all learn? What did and didn’t work? Which elements of the BCM planning process need to be revisited and refined?

Who should attend?

The Workshop is open to all and we would recommend that anyone with responsibility for, or with an interest in, business continuity should consider attending in order to learn first hand about the difficulties that can arise in responding to the disruptive effects of wide-scale flooding. Currently, the threat from further flooding remains at a high level and with above average rainfall forecast for the winter, looks like remaining as a major concern. More specifically we hope that you will consider this Workshop if …

  • You work for an organisation that was directly affected by the flooding … your first-hand experiences are of the greatest importance to the Workshop
  • Your organisation has facilities in the affected area, for which you have BCM responsibility … again, we are interested in your views of the outcomes: what worked well; and what didn’t work as expected.
  • You work for a Local Authority or other responding agency or company … your contribution to the response and recovery process is vital and so we need to understand more about the process of communicating and working together effectively.
  • You have facilities in a flood-risk area and want to learn from the experience of other organisations … to verify that your BCP is comprehensive; to develop ideas for a test or exercise scenario.
