| Introduction
Written and compiled by BCI members, with these guidelines we aim to provide a generic framework for successful Business Continuity Management by providing an approach, which a BC practitioner can use to inform his/her own business programme.
The BCI Good Practice Guidelines are designed to provide assistance in understanding through the application of six Business Continuity Management stages.
With these six principles, the process and terminology of Business Continuity Management is explained plus recommendations for good practice are provided.
The guidelines aim to be applicable to all organisations, regardless of size or industry sector, and are intended for use by business continuity management practitioners, risk managers auditors and regulators.
GPG review
The BCI has decided to undertake a major review and extension of the Good Practice Guidelines during the course of 2009 with a view to re-launching them as GPG 2010. Although the basic principles and concepts will not change, the BCI feel that a more comprehensive publication is now needed to reflect both the needs of our international membership and also the emergence of important new BCM standards around the world.
However, we felt that given the extended period between the launch of GPG2008 and the possible launch of GPG2010, it was important to have an interim review of GPG2008 to ensure it is still up to date and that any changes due to the launch of BS25999-2 had been properly addressed. Therefore a sub-committee of the Membership Council have reviewed GPG2008 and made some relatively minor amendments to its format and presentation. There have been no major contextual changes and so we have decided to name it GPG2008-2 rather than give it a full new release reference.
This is now the version that can be downloaded from the website. Students who are intending to take the CBCI examination are informed that they can use GPG2008-2 as their study guide and it will not in anyway impact their ability to answer the CBCI questions. For those who have used the original GPG2008 for study purposes, we can confirm that no new questions based upon the amended GPG have been added.
BCI Benchmark – powered by INONI
Self evaluation and best practice in BCM standards
In order to take the usefulness of the GPG to another level, the Business Continuity Institute has joined forces with INONI Ltd to develop BCI Benchmark, a powerful self assessment tool which will enable companies to benchmark and measure their business continuity plans and processes against the latest version of the GPG 2007.
BCI Benchmark will also allow benchmarking and self-evaluation against the principles contained in other international business continuity standards. This provides an excellent opportunity to use BCI Benchmark as a teaching aid enabling the user to learn how to improve BCM within their organization.
