New Report: Supply Chain Resilience 2012
This report summarises the key outcomes of the newly published BCI’s 4th Annual Supply Chain Resilience Survey, which considered the causes and consequences of supply chain disruption; techniques to identify key supply chains; as well as offering up approaches and solutions to achieve supply chain resilience.

532 from across 68 countries and 14 different industry sectors responded to the survey. The survey was supported by the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply, Zurich Insurance Group and DHL Supply Chain.

The survey highlights the importance that outsourcing decisions have in supply chain resilience, with service issues now accounting for 35% of supply chain resilience disruptions (up from 17% in 2011), putting it in third place on the list of causes of supply chain disruptions.

Other key findings include:

  • Over 73% of organizations recorded at least one supply chain disruption in 2011 with 39% of analysed disruption originating from below the immediate supplier
  • 58% experienced a high impact supply chain disruption caused by unplanned IT or telecom outages
  • 48% experienced a supply chain disruption due to adverse weather
  • Currency volatility was identified as the fourth leading cause of supply chain disruption
  • One in five companies registered a single incident loss of more than €1M

BCI Survey on ISO 22301 Part Two now available
This first part of the study focussed on the current landscape and the benefits that the ISO is expected to bring to the BCM community; here now part two!

Sponsored by LRQA, this report summarises the findings of the recent BCI survey on the adoption of standards and ISO 22301. Representatives from LRQA will be delivering the plenary session on day two of the BCM World Conference and Exhibition on 7th to 8th November 2012 at Olympia, London, which will continue the big ISO 22301 debate and will also be on hand to take your questions in the exhibition area.

Drawing on the expertise and experience of more than 600 business continuity professionals, this eagerly awaited second part of the BCI survey looks at attitudes towards ISO 22301 and considers the need to get buy-in to adopt the new standard be it through alignment, compliance or certification; looks at transition issues and explores the reasons why some organisations will choose not to adopt this ISO.

The survey reveals that three quarters of respondents will need to engage with colleagues and executives beyond the resilience collective in order to make adoption happen, with 48% requiring a business case.

The report concludes that a successful and widely adopted international standard provides a new opportunity for the BCI to revisit discussions with the insurance industry on business interruption insurance; influence public procurement policy around supply chain resilience; and put business continuity on the corporate reporting agenda.

BCI Study: The Adoption of BCM Standards and ISO 22301: Part One
This study was launched to answer the following questions:

  • What does the current landscape look like with respect to the adoption of BCM standards?
  • How is the publication of the new ISO 22301 likely to be received by the BCM community?
  • What are going to be the gains and pains in adopting the ISO 22301?

This first part of the study will focus on the current landscape and the benefits that the ISO is expected to bring to the BCM community.   The second part of the study will consider the practicalities of adopting the new ISO in terms of business case, decision makers, perceived issues and reasons why organisations will not be going down this route.  The second part of the study will be published in November to support a discussion on the subject at the BCM World Conference and Exhibition.

New Research Report now available:  Identifying Key Suppliers” by Steve Wicks MBCI

Download your copy here

Short review:

In today’s global marketplace businesses are becoming increasingly reliant on suppliers for the provision of key processes, activities, products and services in support of their strategic business goals. The result is that now, more than ever, the failure of a key supplier has potential to seriously damage reputation, productivity, compliance and financial performance. Yet despite this, there is no recognised standard or guidance for identifying a tier one key supplier base and, up to now, there has been little or no research on how to do so effectively.  This new report provides a comprehensive review of techniques employed to identify key supply chain partners and is illustrated with seven benchmarking studies and six case studies. It concludes that stakeholders expect businesses to manage their tier one key suppliers as part of business continuity management, and the author offers a scalable framework process model, risk matrix tool and segmentation process to help businesses effectively identify those suppliers whose failure could have the greatest business consequences, thereby helping businesses plan appropriate resilience strategies.

New Report Released – Measuring the Value of BCM
If we asked you the question “What value does your BCM add to your organisation and how do you measure it?” could you answer it?  Martin Caddick, Leader of the BCI Partnership Working Group, takes a look at this new ‘science’ in the report, including current practices as well as the results of our recent survey of 500 members, which confirms that a) there is a need to measure and benchmark the value contribution of BCM if we are to secure executive engagement and commitment to BCM, and b) that a consistent set of criteria with guidelines like a BCM Scorecard needs to be developed in order to enable businesses to measure the value of BCM programmes.  This report is definitely worth a read!
