Individual membership of the BCI is open to BC professionals at all levels of experience. Statutory membership of the BCI provides internationally recognised status and demonstrates both professional and technical competency in BC. Increasingly employers ask for BCI membership when employing new business continuity staff and throughout the world major companies, when issuing tender documents for business continuity consultancy and services, insist on BCI membership.

This Masterclass is designed to provide participants with one day focussed entirely on how a BIA is carried out in an organization. It combines a presentation on the theory and current good practice on doing a BIA with a real-life application of this theory by a guest expert to share hints, tips and lessons learned on the BIA process. Participants will then have the opportunity to take part in a facilitated practical session to carry out a BIA using a case study with example questionnaires and templates to take away.

Ian Charters FBCI is an independent BCM specialist with over 20 years experience and experience in a range of sectors. As well as consulting he runs public and in-house training courses. He facilitates the BCI NE Forum, has contributed to International Standards and the GPG and wrote 'Business Impact Analysis ; A practical approach'.
Biography: I’m a relative newcomer to Business Continuity and have been a practitioner for the past three years. I joined the BCI as an affiliate having completed the courses at the Emergency Planning College; also I am a member of the BCI West Midlands Forum Planning Committee. I have worked for Ashfield District Council which is a small district Authority in the North of Nottinghamshire for the past five years. I am the Business Contingency and Sustainability Manager. Initially I started work with the remit of Sustainability and Climate Change. As things have progressed I have inherited more and more functions with Business Continuity being one of the responsibilities that I have. The others include Carbon/Energy Management, Corporate Health and Safety, Green Deal and Eco, Disabled Facilities Grants and Emergency Planning and Risk Management. I have been responsible for implementing Business Continuity throughout the Council for the past three years. Previous to working for Ashfield DC I was the Nature Conservation Officer for Nottingham City Council. My Degree is in Hospitality Management and Related Service and I am a qualified Coach and Workplace Mediator.
Presentation: Business Impact Assessments - from nothing to somewhere
As a council we had very little in the way of BC plans. The IT disaster plan was five sentences. So I started from nothing and have now developed a simple but comprehensive process and plan that enables the Council to identify its critical functions, develop robust plans and d effective testing. Everyone is involved and Business Continuity is now threaded through business plans. The Impact Assessments were critical in starting the process but I wish I had known then what I know now as the journey may have been easier.
Biography: After spending 11 years in the Armed Forces, I joined Yorkshire Electricity in 1995 and although that has long gone, I have been in the Utilities Industry in its various incarnations, the current one being RWE npower for the past 18 years and still counting. Within that time I have held a number roles, the most recent being a Business Resilience Adviser which I have been doing for the past 9 years.
Presentation: The BIA, The way we did it!
This presentation covers the development of a BIA over the past 9 year and highlights the different stages and evolution to its current version. It will cover some of the pitfalls along the way and explain why some things have been left out and why some things that you may not expect to find in the template are in.
