Mandatory vaccinations are now the key to entering workplaces and public spaces in Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Arabian government imposed mandatory vaccinations for all members of the public on Sunday (Aug 1).

Electronic application “Tawakulna”, will now be used to record how many doses of vaccine a person has received. The application is key to access public spaces such as public administrations, private institutions, educational institutions, places of entertainment and public transport.

As of today, the mandates have been extended to private and public sector businesses. Gulf News reported that workers refusing to get vaccinated in Saudi Arabia, can now risk dismissal under the ‘gross misconduct’ act.

A lawyer told the publisher that this type of mandate can destroy trust and confidence between businesses and employers.

With nearly 27 million doses administered across Saudi Arabia, more than half of the country’s citizens have received their first shot.

Exemptions apply for age and health conditions, but citizens wanting to enter public spaces must prove their immunity. Amid the emergence of the Delta variant, the government has further imposed a two dose vaccination mandate for any citizen wishing to travel abroad.
