We receive a lot of questions about BCI Membership grades and how they are different from one another, as well as the various benefits that they provide. In this short article, we will provide an in-depth overview of the grades in the hope of guiding you through your BCI Membership journey – and if you are not a Member yet, we hope this will help you understand whether a BCI Membership is something that could help you in your career. 

First things first, the BCI distinguishes its members into three main categories: 

  • Non-Certified Members (Students/Affiliates)
  • Certified Members (CBCI, AMBCI, MBCI, FBCI)
  • Voting Members (AMBCI, MBCI, FBCI, and honorary members)  

Student/Affiliate

This BCI Membership grade is the most basic one and does not require you to do any training or take an exam. You apply through the BCI website and there is no need to supply your evidence of knowledge and/or professional experience. 

  • The BCI considers a Student an individual who is currently undertaking a study on either a full-time or part-time course that is related to business continuity and/or resilience
  • A BCI Affiliate is an individual who has an active interest in business continuity & resilience or who is considering pursuing a career as a business continuity & resilience professional/practitioner.

CBCI

If you have passed your CBCI Exam within the last three years, chances are that you are a CBCI Member. This means that you now have an internationally recognised credential that demonstrates your knowledge of the BCI Good Practice Guidelines (GPG), and that your level may be upgraded upon submitting evidence of professional experience for higher membership grades.
