IT and telecom outages ranked 8th in the risk and threat assessment in the BCI’s Horizon Scan report for 2022. However, it jumped to 2nd when respondents were asked to indicate which event had the most impact for them over the past 12 months. This ranking shows the high impact that losing these critical functions can have and also, perhaps, reflects an increase in usage over the past three years as organizations and individuals relied on digital communication solutions more heavily in remote office and hybrid setups.

Of course, an increased demand on telecoms increases the impact of an outage, and those organizations that rely heavily on digital communications have a higher risk exposure. Additionally, telecoms organizations need to service the increased demand and ensure they can deliver against any service level agreements (SLAs). Therefore, from both perspectives, it is essential that resiliency is built into the operations of such a critical service.

Although, in recent months, we have seen various outages and threats emerge in the telecommunications sector. Therefore, in this article we will consider some of these threats and how they impact organizations and services. We will also cover how organizations in the telecommunications sector have built resilience into their operations to reduce the impact of these outages and how they have responded during certain crisis situations.
