Storm Eunice has hit the UK with winds reaching up to 122mph, causing a huge scale of travel disruption and widespread power outages for homes and businesses.

The Met Office has issued rare ‘Red Weather Warnings’ for parts of the country, showing that the high wind speeds represent a danger to life.

“The red warning areas indicate a significant danger to life as extremely strong winds provide the potential for damage to structures and flying debris,” said the organization.

More than 400 flights from and within the UK have already been cancelled, according to a BBC report, while train operators are urging people not to travel and speed restrictions have been put in place across much of the network. In addition, reports suggest that more than 100,000 homes are without power, with many of these located in the southwest.

In parallel with the Met Office, the UK’s National Highways also issued a warning, stating that the storm “will lead to dangerous driving conditions for vulnerable vehicles with exceptional sidewinds and wind-blown debris with Essential Travel Only advised.”

The effects of Eunice also arrive days after Storm Dudley caused similar disruption across the north and east of the country. Once the storm passes, the cumulative impact of the storms on both home and businesses across the country are likely to spread into the weekend, with the hope that a resumption of travel will begin to reduce the delay to services.
