Considering resilience in the travel industry

A mark of resilience is the ability to adapt to a changing environment and, from just a cursory look, one of the industries which would seem to struggle most to adapt under a global pandemic is the travel industry. Indeed, national lockdowns and other pandemic-related restrictions expressly prohibited tourism in parts of 2020 and 2021.

However, as Willie Walsh, Director General of the International Air Transport Association, frames it in the IATA’s 2021 Annual Review:

“Resilience is a hallmark of aviation. We will get through the COVID-19 crisis.”

Since travel and tourism represented 10.4 per cent of global GDP and 10.6 per cent of all jobs in a pre-pandemic 2019, the hope is that resilience expands beyond just aviation and across the sector as a whole. As such, this article will look at the travel industry from the perspective of the aviation, tourism and hospitality sectors, including interviews with Michael Puldy, CEO of Puldy Resiliency Partners, and Ravi Birdy, Executive Director of Roseate Hotels and Resorts, who both considered the resiliency of the travel sector.
